North Luangwa Safaris

Found to the North-East of its more famous Southern neighbour, the North Luangwa National Park covers 4,636 km² of pristine wilderness and a visit here means an experience that will be shared with very few other travellers over the course of a year.

Its eastern boundary is the Luangwa River, whilst the Mwaleshi River runs from east to west through the park, meaning it suffers from access challenges during the summer rains. As a result the park is only open to visitors between mid-June and October each year, which helps to add to the mystique and sense of adventure that a luxury North Luangwa safari holiday brings. There are just three camps located within the park which, much like their sister properties in the South Luangwa, are rebuilt at the start of every season so there is a very rustic feel to them, but they are still very comfortable.

Activities on a tailor made North Luangwa safari holiday are enjoyed in vehicles, on foot and even by bike depending on your preference. With so few camps in the park there is the opportunity to operate safaris on a less restricted time frame than some other parks across the country. Wildlife is a little more dispersed than in some of the larger, better established parks, but there is still an excellent chance of seeing lion, leopard, elephant and varied plains game, including Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay’s zebra. The park is also home to one of Zambia’s few rhino sanctuaries, a great chance to see these magnificent beasts in a country not renowned for sightings of them.
