Our specialist says:
Four wildly different locations for an unforgetable Southern African experience.
Comprising of four very different, but wonderfully complementary elements of what makes Africa just such a wonderful place to visit, this trip takes you from West to East, covering the whole of the South of the continent and offers a superb mix of its best areas.
Starting in the iconic city of Cape Town, you will enjoy the contemporary side of life, mixing with the locals in art galleries and choice restaurants, relaxing on the beaches or enjoying some of the many outdoor activities that this amazing city has to offer. Of course, you can also hit the reliable and exciting tourist trail, with all of the key spots to visit available to you throughout the year. Next up you will fly in to the Kruger area, to enjoy perhaps Africa’s best-known attraction, its unique wildlife. You will be staying in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, arguably the finest game viewing spot that South Africa, and perhaps all of Africa has to offer, with amazing wildlife sightings to be enjoy wherever you look. From the Sabi Sand drive across the border in to Mozambique, enjoying the unique experience of an African land border crossing, before continuing on to the vibrant capital city Maputo. Perhaps the most interesting of all African capitals, Maputo has a unique history which you can enjoy on a city tour during your stay here. From there a boat will whisk you away to one of the rustic, unspoilt beaches, for which Mozambique is slowly gaining international acclaim. That said, the pace of the uptake has been slow, so you can revel in the privacy in which you enjoy this beautiful part of the world, either relaxing to your heart’s content or enjoying the excellent water-based activities which make this part of the world such a big draw.
I created this trip - call me to create yours.
Day 1: Your adventure begins
Fly overnight from London to Cape Town tonight, safe in the knowledge that the early morning arrival means you can enjoy a full day exploring when you get there.
Day 2: Cape Town
Land this morning and enjoy being escorted through passport control and baggage collection, before your driver takes you on the drive in to town where you will be staying at the stunning More Quarters, a modern set of apartments in a historic building on a quiet, residential street, close to the very heart of the city. This afternoon is yours to do as you please, but perhaps you would like to take advantage of the amazing central location by taking a stroll through the nearby Company Gardens and on to either Kloof, Long or Bree Street where a whole array of lunch spots awaits you.
Day 3-5: Time to explore
Spend your time exploring the vibrant city of Cape Town, enjoying its amazing restaurants, thriving arts scene, stunning views and array out outdoor activities. For those looking to really get under the skin of the city and “live like a local” we have a number of superb guides who we can book for you, who will get you away from the crowds and in to secret spots only known by a handful of locals. Our friends at Escape + Explore have some of the finest guides Cape Town has to offer, taking you on walking trails along Table Mountain, stand up paddleboarding by secret beaches where penguins relax in peace and on mountain biking trails on deserted hillsides. They take along delicious picnics for the day out and are perfect for those looking to experience something a little different.
Day 6: Kruger bound
You’ll be transferred back to the airport this morning, in good time to catch a morning flight up to Skukuza, a small airport sitting on the Southern boundary of the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, a wildlife rich series of private game reserves which shares an open border with the world-famous Kruger National Park. An hour’s drive through the reserve which see you reach the charming Notten’s Bush Camp your home for the next 3 nights. Family-owned and run with exclusively Shangaan (the indigenous local people) as guides, Notten’s is a glorious throwback to safaris of old, with rooms lit by oil lamps in the evenings and meals served around a large table, with a warm and friendly atmosphere always in the air. Enjoy some time at leisure to relax and enjoy the tranquil setting before heading out in the middle of the afternoon for some exploration of the bush.
Days 7-8: Safaris from Notten's
Days at Notten’s start early, with coffee and biscuits enjoyed in the pre-dawn cool before heading out to explore the bush. Early mornings are a spectacular time to be on safari as the predators, for which the Sabi Sand is famous, are returning from a night of hunting and can in many instances still be seen on their kill. Enjoy the stunning morning light, beloved of photographers, makes for a beautiful backdrop to your safari and you will return to camp in time for breakfast and some time to relax, perhaps taking a swim in the pool. Afternoon game drives are another chance to see and photograph the wildlife, as well as learn more about the animals, as well as the bush in general, from your guide. The local Shangaan people have an almost mystical attraction to the bush and as well as learning the “true” science behind what you see, you will get an insight in to tribal lore and stories about the bush as well.
Day 9: Safari and Maputo
There will be one final opportunity for a game drive this morning, before breakfast is served on the sprawling deck at the front of the lodge. You will then be collected for the drive across the border in to Mozambique, enjoying the bushveld as you drive as well as the intricacies of crossing an African land border. From there you will proceed on to the vibrant capital city of Maputo, which sits on the shore of the Indian Ocean and has a truly unique feel to it, with the traditional African feel blended with the legacy of Portuguese colonialism. Spend 2 nights here, based at the glorious Serena Polana Hotel, the iconic place to stay in the city.
Day 10: Exploring Maputo
Spend this morning exploring Maputo with your guide, learning more about the history of the city, especially when it was a powerful trading port, then known as Lourenco Marques. They will also tell you more about the Portuguese colonial influence on Mozambique as a whole and the discuss the country’s turbulent recent history, which only know is starting to abate and make this a viable and thriving tourist destination. The afternoon is at leisure for you to relax, perhaps heading to one of the many excellent seafood restaurants to gorge on delicious Mozambiquan prawns, a local speciality.
Day 11: The beach is calling
You will be able to enjoy a leisurely morning today before being collected and transferred to the dock where a boat will be waiting to take you on the transfer across to Machangulo Beach Lodge where you will be spending the final 4 nights of your adventure. Enjoy lunch and then sit back, relax and enjoy this wonderful, unspoilt stretch of beach.
Days 12-14: The choice is yours
One of the beauties of doing your beach time in Mozambique is that, although there is the choice of simply sitting back and doing little more than enjoying the sunshine with a good book and a cold drink, there is plenty to keep you occupied if you are looking to be active. The scuba diving is excellent in this part of the world, as is the fishing, whilst the snorkelling isn’t too bad either. There is also plenty of exploring to do, with self-guided canoe trips in to the mangroves popular with guests, as well as trips to the nearby villages of Santa Maria or Inhaca Island. However you choose to spend your time, you can be sure you will be wonderfully well looked after by Machangulo’s charming team.
Day 15: Your journey home begins
Breakfast will be enjoyed with a view of the Indian Ocean before you board the boat for the journey back to Maputo. A transfer will take you to the airport in good time for an afternoon flight to Johannesburg where you will need to check-in for an overnight flight back to London Heathrow.
