A classic and affordable South Africa and Vic Falls Safari

Enjoy the buzz of Cape Town, a Safari in the Kruger area and the adventure of Victoria Falls

Enjoy a classic journey through three of Southern Africa’s most iconic highlights: cosmopolitan Cape Town, the wildlife-rich wilderness of the Timbavati Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger area, and the mighty Victoria Falls. With direct flights between each destination, this is a seamless way to combine city, safari, and natural wonder in one unforgettable holiday.

Tamara, our Southern Africa specialist, says:

"What I love about this itinerary is how much you can experience without it feeling over the top. Cape Town gives you the buzz of the city and that incredible coastal setting, then Kruger brings the thrill of safari without compromising on comfort. By the time you reach Victoria Falls, you’ve got space to slow down and really enjoy the moment. It’s proof that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get the full Southern Africa experience – it’s all here, and it works beautifully."

Begin in Cape Town, staying at the City Lodge V&A Waterfront. Perfectly placed for exploring the city’s vibrant heart, you’re just steps away from its shops, restaurants, and bustling Waterfront. From here, take in the sweeping views from the top of Table Mountain, trace the city’s history with a visit to Robben Island, and venture out along the spectacular Cape Peninsula, where penguins waddle along the sands at Boulders Beach. Whether you’re drawn to food, wine, culture, or scenery, Cape Town delivers it all.

Next, fly north to the Greater Kruger region, where Bateleur Safari Camp offers an authentic and intimate wildlife experience. Here, your days revolve around thrilling game drives in search of the Big Five and countless other species. This private concession means fewer vehicles and a more personal connection to the wilderness, whether you’re watching elephants gather at a waterhole or tracking lions through the bush. Between game drives, unwind back at the lodge with hearty meals, a dip in the pool, or simply soaking up the sights and sounds of the African bush.

Finally, travel on to Zimbabwe for a stay at Ilala Lodge, just minutes from Victoria Falls itself. From here, you can walk to the thundering cascades, take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, or opt for a scenic helicopter flight for a bird’s-eye view of one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles. For those seeking adventure, white-water rafting and gorge swings await, while those after something gentler can relax with sundowners as the spray of the falls rises in the distance.

This itinerary is ideal if you want to experience the best of Southern Africa in one trip whilst keeping affordability in mind. With carefully chosen accommodation and smooth connections throughout, it offers the perfect blend of energy, wilderness, and wonder.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1-4 Welcome to Cape Town

Cape Town Table Mountain

From the airport you’ll be transferred into the heart of Cape Town, where you’ll spend the next three nights at the City Lodge V&A Waterfront. Perfectly located just a short walk from the harbour’s shops, restaurants, and attractions, the hotel makes an excellent base for exploring the city. Rooms are modern and comfortable, there’s a pool for relaxing between outings, and the setting puts you within easy reach of Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the Cape Peninsula. It’s a simple, convenient, and great-value option that lets you make the most of your time in this vibrant city.

Day 4-7 Time for a Safari

From your hotel, you will be collected and transferred back to the airport to catch your flight north to the Greater Kruger, where you’ll be spending the next three nights at Bateleur Safari Camp in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. This intimate, eco-friendly camp offers a classic safari experience with just a handful of rooms, so the atmosphere is relaxed and personal. Daily game drives with expert guides take you in search of the Big Five and the region’s other wildlife, with the Timbavati especially well known for its healthy leopard population. Day 7 A quick stop in Joburg

January

January is the perfect time to visit the Cape — hot, dry and buzzing. Lounge on beaches or explore the Winelands and Garden Route in peak summer sun. Inland, it’s the wet season in Kruger, with bursts of heavy rain and vivid green landscapes. It's also the end of the birthing season, attracting predators and creating dramatic wildlife scenes.

February

The hottest month in Cape Town, February is ideal for alfresco lunches in the Winelands or scenic drives along the Garden Route. There are fewer tourists, perfect weather and excellent vineyard experiences. Safari regions remain hot, humid and wet, so it’s better to stick to the coast and cultural highlights at this time of year.

March

March brings settled, sunny days to Cape Town, the Winelands and Garden Route — ideal for laid-back trips and less crowded experiences. In Kruger, the lush landscape and newborn wildlife create brilliant photographic opportunities, with clear skies and dramatic colours. Rainfall eases across the country, making it a great time to combine regions.

April

April’s mild weather and lower visitor numbers make it one of the best months to explore. Cape Town is perfect for hiking Table Mountain or visiting Kirstenbosch Gardens. The Garden Route and Drakensberg are quiet and cool. In Kruger, rutting season begins — male antelope at their most impressive, sparking fierce, fascinating fights.

May

With summer crowds gone and crisp, dry days setting in, May is a peaceful time to travel. Safari viewing improves as vegetation thins in Kruger, and game becomes easier to spot. The Cape has a mix of sunny and rainy days, and the Winelands feel calm and welcoming after the peak season rush.

June

The start of winter brings cool, dry safari conditions — ideal for spotting wildlife clustered around shrinking water sources. Cape Town gets wetter, though days can still be bright. Whale watching begins along the Western Cape, while the Drakensberg is a dream for hikers enjoying fresh air and peaceful trails. The Comrades Marathon adds sporting buzz to KwaZulu Natal.

July

July is peak whale watching around Hermanus and Plettenberg Bay, with whales close to shore to calve. It’s also the best time for safaris — cool, dry and clear. Kruger’s wildlife gathers at waterholes, and sightings are exceptional. Cape Town remains cool and drizzly, but it’s a quiet, rewarding time for active or cultural trips.

August

Spring starts to show as wildflowers carpet the West Coast and Namaqualand in vibrant colour — a true spectacle. Game viewing is still strong in Kruger, and whales continue to visit the Cape’s coastline. Temperatures begin rising after winter’s chill, and clear skies return, making this a great time to combine coast, culture and safari.

September

September is superb for combining experiences — wildlife viewing is excellent in Kruger and Madikwe, while whales are frequently seen along the southern coast. Spring flowers are still blooming, and warmer temperatures make outdoor exploration more inviting. In the Drakensberg, snow-capped peaks linger as trails begin to warm up for hiking.

October

October is one of the best all-round months to visit. Cape Town and the Winelands are warming up, with long sunny days and few crowds. Safari conditions remain strong in Kruger and KwaZulu Natal, and the beaches are heating up. Whether you want wildlife, wine or coastline, it’s hard to go wrong this month.

November

Cape Town soaks up the early summer sun, with calm days ideal for exploring. It’s the last chance to see southern right whales before they head off. Inland, the rains return to Kruger and KwaZulu Natal, but afternoon storms are spectacular and short-lived. Visitor numbers increase as the festive season nears — book early.

December

December buzzes with summer energy. The first two weeks are a sweet spot — great weather and fewer crowds. Later in the month, it’s peak holiday season across the country. In Kruger, landscapes burst into colour with flame lilies and baby animals. Book early for Christmas trips — this is one of the most popular times to visit.

What can I say….my son and myself had the most wonderful time in Kenya thanks to the first-class itinerary that Ben and Louise put together for us. We spoke with Ben many times to ensure he ‘got it right’. This was our 2nd visit to Kenya, and it certainly lived up to our expectations and memories. Throughout our time in Kenya, we saw many lions, giraffes, elephants, ostriches, hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards, to name just a few. Nothing was too much trouble for all the staff; we cannot have been looked after any better. I would highly recommend Far and Wild; they are so knowledgeable and have personally visited the lodges and areas. We are already planning another visit, and we cannot wait. Since our return again Ben phoned to see how it went in addition to emails.

I have just returned from the most amazing trip to Tanzania, booked with Far & Wild. Everything went so smoothly from the first time I spoke with them. The planning was great, the itinerary was perfect for us, and the lodges were amazing. We spent 10 nights with an amazing guide, travelling through Northern Tanzania and even got to see the migration, which was a lifetime ambition of mine. This wasn't our first safari, so we were nervous as to how it would compare, but it was spot on. We're particularly grateful that she suggested a private 'bush lunch' in the Ngorongoro Crater as the public picnic spot was very busy! I will certainly be using them again to book our next trip....we're thinking of a relaxing beach stay next time to get over the excitement of safari!

Just back from another amazing F&W organised trip to Namibia with the family (8 adults). Having been there before, Alistair tailored our trip to include our favourite locations and added a new one for us, Okonjima Plains camp, which we loved. The quality of accommodation and guiding, activities, food and drinks was exceptional throughout. Although not inexpensive I felt it was good value for the level of luxury we had. Kwessi Dunes, Shipwreck lodge, Ongava, Okonjima with pit stops Windhoek (city tour recommended ), Swakopmund (Sandwich Harbour and Walvis Bay tour) and Grootberg lodge (best sundowner drive )

We had a wonderful trip to São Tomé and Príncipe - a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea with paradise (almost empty) beaches and jungle forest. It was all well organised by Far and Wild and we stayed at Omali lodge at Sao Tome, then on Roca Sundy, and Sunday Praia at Principe - a great combination of different types of resorts/hotels. Omali is close to Sao Tome town with its colonial buildings, markets, hustle and bustle. Roca Sunday gives an old plantation experience and Sundy Praia a luxury beach experience. Very friendly (from time to time a bit slow) service, great fresh food, specifically if you like fish/seafood, vegetables and fruits (almost all sourced locally). Nice temperature between 23 and 30 degrees Celsius, nice swimming conditions. We really recommend this for those who want to experience a pristine destination with few other tourists and friendly and welcoming people. The islands also feel (and I believe are) very safe. At Principe, there are no dangerous animals, snakes or whatever, and it was great to be able to hike in the jungle without being very conscious of where to put your hands and feet. Go before everyone else does!

Back home again, basking in the joys of a superb safari. Every aspect you arranged for us, including linking up with Mack Air and Wild Horizons locally to transport us. The choice of camps, Camp Hwange in Zimbabwe and Muchenenje Safari Lodge in Botswana, was spot on and exactly what we had hoped for - ideally situated, comfortable, in good surroundings, and with excellent wildlife on the doorstep and throughout the wider country. The service staff in each looked after us very well, catering was excellent, and the game guides were professional, knowledgeable and helpful. The weather was, as usual for that part of the world, also good at the time of our visit. Blue skies and stunning sunsets. Warm but not too hot during the day, although quite cold at sunrise when viewing game. The viewing started. You made us happy, and we recommend you to similar safari enthusiasts with confidence.

Wow! These guys are amazing. Can’t recommend them highly enough. Friendly AND efficient! Sorted out our trip (last minute and lots of different family member needs, sorry!) in record time and everything worked like clockwork. Trip of a lifetime to the Masai Mara. Will be back (and use F&W again!)!
