Nyungwe is one of the oldest Afro-Montane forests in Africa. The forest is of special interest to nature enthusiasts. It consists of a wide array of eco-systems, and offers wonderful fairy tale vistas over the canopy. The Mahogany and Ebony trees dominate the canopy level whilst giant ferns and orchids cover the forest floor.
The forest houses a network of walking trails that exceed 130km, with every kilometre offering superb birding, butterfly, and primate spotting opportunities - it is home to 13 species of primate, including chimpanzee, and Rwenzori (Angola) colobus, L’Hoest’s, red-tailed, and Vervet monkeys. Many of the routes traverse fern-lined ravines and cross several streams.
Cyamudongo Forest is home to a small number of habituated chimpanzees, sightings can be a little tricky due to the thick vegetation, and the troop are known to feed high up and move quickly.
People interested in learning about one of the country’s biggest exports, tea, can visit Gisakura Tea Estate. Tea estate tours and tea tasting can be arranged.
