Cormoran Lodge

Wooden cabins built into the hillside overlooking the lake
Lake KivuRwanda· 7 Rooms · ££

Deliberately simple, but very comfortable

A unique and peaceful setting to enjoy wonderful views and activities on Lake Kivu; the VIP cabin has views of the fiery crater of Nyiragongo Volcano in DR Congo

Location: Cormoran Lodge sits in a quiet, scenic spot just outside Kibuye (Karongi), on the northern shores of Lake Kivu. Built into a steep hillside overlooking the water, it offers striking views across the lake to the hills of eastern Congo. It's a calm and breezy place to break up the journey between Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park, or simply to pause for a few days of lakeside relaxation. The town is close enough for a wander, but the lodge feels nicely tucked away from the bustle.

Rooms: There are just seven wooden cabins at Cormoran Lodge, each individually designed and set on stilts above the lake. Inside, the style is simple and unfussy - polished timber floors, soft lighting, and locally made furniture. All cabins have en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, private verandas with lake views, and a sense of rustic charm. The VIP and family cabin is larger and more spacious, perfect if you're after a little extra room or travelling with children.

Amenities: Despite its small size, the lodge is well set up for a comfortable stay. There's a lakeside restaurant serving a mix of Rwandan dishes and international staples (the grilled tilapia is a favourite), and a relaxed bar with excellent sunset views. You will also find a small man-made beach, a wooden jetty for boat trips or swimming, and a few loungers for unwinding with a book. Free Wi-Fi is available in the main area, though it can be patchy at times.

Activities: Cormoran Lodge is ideal for low-key adventures or lazy days by the water. You can take a boat trip across Lake Kivu to visit Napoleon Island or Amahoro Island, explore local fishing villages, or try your hand at kayaking. There are walking trails nearby, and it's an easy tuk-tuk ride into town to visit the Kibuye Genocide Memorial. Birdlife around the lodge is surprisingly food too - keep an eye out for sunbirds and kingfishes fitting through the trees.

Sustainability: This is the lodge that quietly keeps sustainability at its core. It runs largely on solar energy, uses local materials in its construction, and employs staff from the surrounding community. Waste is carefully managed, and water is sourced and filtered on-site. They are also committed to reducing their footprint and supporting local livelihoods.
