A charming, small hotel located in central Lamu, an ideal place to stay to explore the town. It’s elevated position on Lamu Island, South East Kenya, allows birds eye views of Lamu town, an archipelago of islands and dhows sailing on the Indian Ocean. UNESCO gave Lamu the status of World Heritage. Baytil Ajaib means ‘House of Wonder’ in Swahili, and is a lovingly restored (over a whopping 11 years) 18th Century palatial Swahili House. Owner Paul Weaver is a personal host, making your stay more unique.

Baytil Ajaib has two en-suite double rooms and two suites. The architecture provides natural air-conditioning. The rooms have large 4-poster beds along with further traditional furniture. One suite has two double rooms, whilst the second has one, and a nice sitting room. Each room and suite has complete privacy and is furnished with authentic Lamu furniture and adorned with antiques from Morocco, China and India. Visitors can discuss their food preferences with the chef, who provides Swahili cuisine, seafood or international dishes as required.

The hosts offer a tour of Lamu and introductions to local residents, shops and galleries. Or you can explore the narrow streets of Lamu town with its ancient fort, its wood carvers, juice bars and donkeys. Discover the island's history at the Lamu Museum, or enjoy relaxation on the great beaches. Dhow trips and water sports can be booked locally, as can visits to ancient sites and ruins.
