From Private Atolls to Ancient Trading Towns: Ten Places to Honeymoon in Asia

Whilst a honeymoon can conjure up a single image, an overwater villa, white sand, and nothing else on the agenda, Asia is spoilt for choice in a way that single image never quite captures. No other continent moves this easily between a private atoll and a working tea estate, between total seclusion and a proper cultural deep-dive, from hill country plantations and floating villages to ancient trading towns and rainforest lodges built out over the mangroves. It's a genuinely enormous continent, far more countries than most people could name on the spot, and that range is exactly what makes it so hard to get bored of as a honeymoon destination, and so difficult to sum up in one packing list or one type of hotel.

We've delved into ten of our favourite places to go in Asia for a honeymoon, each one earning its spot for a different reason, whether that's total seclusion, a proper sense of adventure, or somewhere neither of you has ever thought to look. There's no single "best" month for a honeymoon in Asia, either, as the destinations below span several different climates and hemispheres, so it's always worth checking the season for wherever you have in mind before booking flights. A handful of these also combine naturally into one longer honeymoon, so don't feel you have to choose only one destination, everything below is simply our starting point, easily lengthened, shortened or rebuilt entirely around what the two of you actually want. 1. The Maldives

There are more than a thousand islands scattered across the Maldives, and the trick to a honeymoon here is picking an atoll far enough from Malé that the crowds never really arrive in the first place. 

The Residence Maldives, tucked into the quieter Gaafu Alifu Atoll, is a genuine favourite of ours for exactly that reason: 101 beach, water and pool villas in light wood and airy, natural tones, built for two people to disappear into for a week without needing to think much beyond the next dive on the house reef. What makes it such a natural honeymoon destination isn't only the scenery, it's how little there is to organise once you land, dolphin cruises at dawn, an overwater spa pavilion for the afternoons when even snorkelling feels like too much effort, and a cultural excursion into Maldivian island life for couples who want a little more than sand between their toes. A water villa is worth the extra, if your budget allows, for the sheer theatre of waking up with the lagoon on every side!

2. Thailand

Few honeymoon destinations manage three genuinely different holidays inside one trip as neatly as Thailand does, which is exactly why it suits couples who can't agree on beach versus culture.

 Six Senses Yao Noi, where private-pool villas look out over the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay, is the kind of stay that earns its reputation, the dining largely organic and much of it grown on site, whilst Chiang Mai in the north brings temples and a noticeably slower pace than the capital. Bangkok supplies the energy at the start of a trip, its street food scene alone worth building in an extra day for, and by the time you reach the islands the pace has slowed right down to sunset dinners and quiet stretches of sand. It's a genuinely well-judged mix of romance, adventure and indulgence. One considered trip, in other words, rather than three separate holidays stitched together.

3. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka manages something few other honeymoon destinations do: leopard safaris in the morning and a UNESCO fort at sunset, without an internal flight anywhere in the itinerary.

 Its compact size is the whole appeal, Galle's fort walls, the surf town of Mirissa, the calmer shores of Bentota and the leopards of Yala National Park, which has one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere in the world, all within a few hours' drive of each other. Ceylon Tea Trails, a working tea estate in Hatton, is where we'd recommend heading after the coast, bungalows that come with their own butler and a view that's almost entirely green. Elsewhere, in the Cultural Triangle, Aliya Resort & Spa looks out over the rock fortress of Sigiriya from its own paddy fields, making for a properly memorable sundowner. It suits couples who don't want to choose between beach and culture, because here you simply don't have to.

4. Indonesia

Bali tends to be the default answer when clients mention Indonesia, and there's a strong case for keeping it that way.

 Ubud's rice terraces and jungle retreats sit a short drive from the cliff-top temples at Uluwatu and Tanah Lot, whilst Nusa Dua and Seminyak carry the private-villa, beach-club side of a Bali honeymoon, and Jimbaran Bay is where to build in a sunset seafood dinner on the sand. Further east, Komodo National Park adds a genuinely wild final chapter: Komodo dragons, the largest lizards on earth and tracked on foot on Rinca Island, the pink-tinged sands of Pink Beach, and some of the best diving in Southeast Asia around Padar and the surrounding reefs. Sumba is worth a mention here too, a quieter island again and a short flight on from Bali, where NIHI Sumba's empty beaches, surf breaks and horse rides have made a real case for themselves with couples after somewhere wilder still. It's one we're watching closely, and well worth raising with your specialist directly if that wilder, quieter final chapter appeals.

5. Japan

For couples after something further from the beach-and-spa honeymoon template, Japan offers a completely different kind of romance, one built on structure and history rather than pure lounging. 

A trip built around the historic Nakasendo Trail, walking between preserved Edo-period towns, can include a night at Tokinoyado Kazari Tsutaya in Kiso-Fukushima, a proper ryokan experience complete with a welcome soak in the onsen after the day's walk and a multi-course kaiseki dinner served in your room. Tokyo's neon opens the trip, with a Shinto blessing ceremony arranged at a local shrine and a hands-on soba-making class in Nagano along the way, before Kyoto's temples and gardens close things out, the contrast between the two, on its own, worth the whole itinerary. Couples with a fortnight rather than a week can fly on afterwards to Okinawa, trading temples for the warmer pace of the Kerama Islands, world-class diving over its coral reefs, and the royal history of Shuri Castle, with a few days built around doing very little at all. From Tokyo's neon to a stretch of reef in the Kerama Islands, it's a honeymoon that can be as structured or as slow as you like, and just as happy ending on a beach as on a temple.

6. Vietnam & Cambodia

Hoi An's lantern-lit old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the prettiest places to wander in the whole country. 

Nearby, a private basket-boat ride along the Thu Bon River, ending in dinner at your own floating table with the day's catch, does more to make the case for a Vietnam honeymoon than any amount of description could. In the hills of Mai Chau, AVANA Retreat runs a fairy-light trail into the rainforest to a secret waterfall lit with candles, music and flowers for dinner, a detail that tends to surprise people who think of Vietnam mainly for its cities. The quiet beaches of Six Senses Con Dao, further south again, reward those willing to travel the length of the country to get there. Vietnam also combines naturally with a short extension into Cambodia: three days built around sunrise over Angkor Wat, mist still hanging over the moat before the crowds arrive, with Templation Resort in Siem Reap as a comfortable base for that and for a Mekong cruise or bamboo train ride alongside it. It's an easy add-on to a Vietnam itinerary, and one of the more memorable early starts either of you will have!

7. Kerala, India 

Kerala rarely makes anyone's first-thought honeymoon list, overshadowed by the beaches further east, and that quieter reputation is precisely what makes it such a rewarding pick for two people who'd rather slow down than sightsee. 

A night or two on a private houseboat through the backwaters, gliding past paddy fields and coconut groves with a crew cooking fresh Keralan food on board, is about as private a dinner setting as a honeymoon gets anywhere on this list. Planters Retreat, a working cocoa, rubber and spice estate near Palakkad with just three rooms, offers something quieter and more grounded again, plantation walks and an evening with the family who run it rather than a beach bar. It's worth building in at least one entirely unhurried day, somewhere with nothing booked at all.

8. Borneo

Borneo picks up where a honeymoon needs its wildest chapter, rainforest, reef and mountain within reach of one another in a way few destinations on this list can claim. 

Gaya Island Resort, near Kota Kinabalu, is a genuine favourite of ours: 120 villas on their own stretch of rainforest-backed coastline, with a Spa Village built out over the mangroves and a complimentary couples' massage for those booking five nights or more, a small but lovely touch. The resort takes its sustainability seriously too, reef and mangrove conservation built into how it runs, so it suits a couple who'd like to give something back to where they've chosen to spend their first days as newlyweds. Mount Kinabalu looms in the distance for those who fancy a sunrise summit hike, though it's a genuinely demanding two-day climb rather than an afternoon add-on, so it's one for couples who both fancy the challenge together.

9. The Philippines

El Nido's Bacuit archipelago is the kind of place photographs undersell, limestone cliffs rising sheer out of turquoise water, reachable only by boat, and about as private a honeymoon setting as Southeast Asia offers. 

Pangulasian Island Resort, a ten-minute boat ride from El Nido itself, is where we'd point a couple towards first, 42 villas built from bamboo and wood, an on-site marine centre running its own reef research, and a private stretch of beach that barely needs choreographing for a sunset cruise. Snorkelling with turtles and diving at Tubbataha Reef sit at the adventurous end of a Philippines honeymoon, whilst Vigan's Spanish colonial old town, a living pocket of Ilocano architecture largely untouched since the nineteenth century, offers a slower, very different few days for couples who'd rather finish on heritage than a dive boat. With more than seven thousand islands to choose from, it's a country that rarely asks two people to agree on one kind of holiday, which might be its most romantic quality of all.

10. Malaysia

Malaysia rarely makes it onto a honeymoon shortlist on its own, but Pangkor Laut, a private 300-acre island three miles off Malaysia's west coast in Perak, is reason enough to put it there.

 Ancient rainforest, two million years in the making by the resort's own account, covers most of the island, and the villas are spread through it and along the shoreline rather than stacked around a single pool: garden and hillside villas set back among the trees, beach villas with the sand at the door, and Sea Villas built out on stilts over the water for the full overwater experience. The Spa Village occupies the most secluded corner of the island, and its spa was named the World's Best Private Island Spa at the 2024 World Spa Awards. Luciano Pavarotti was famously taken with the island, and the two-bedroom Pavarotti Suite, set high in the rainforest with views over both the trees and the sea, still carries his name. It's a genuinely compelling honeymoon base, and well worth putting in front of couples who haven't thought to look at Malaysia first.
