As you enter Wilpattu National Park there's a sign declaring that even if you don't spot any leopards while you're here, they'll be watching you! In fact, in recent years we have heard more reports of leopard sightings from Wilpattu than in the more popular national parks like Yala. And this really is the attraction of Wilpattu National Park - there is far less tourist traffic here than elsewhere, and the wildlife sightings are just as good. This is also the place you are most likely to see a sloth bear, and there is an impressive diversity of birds and smaller mammals.
Wilpattu, although one of the oldest national parks, was closed for a long time during the war, and has only really opened up in the last few years. There are some excellent accommodation options near the park entrance, and Wilpattu's location makes it a great wildlife stop on a trip to the north of Sri Lanka or the Cultural Triangle.
