Thailand's Untouched Similans

Discover pristine white beaches and vibrant coral reefs in the Similan Islands, Thailand's most spectacular marine national park.

Floating out in the Andaman Sea, about 100 kilometres northwest of Phuket, the Similan Islands are one of Thailand’s best-kept secrets—and they’re absolutely worth the journey. This cluster of eleven islands is pure paradise, both above and below the waterline.

Declared a national park in 1982, the Similans (from the Malay word sembilan, meaning nine) are a showcase of unspoiled nature. On the eastern side, you’ll find glowing white beaches and postcard-perfect turquoise waters. On the west, things get wilder—giant granite boulders tumble into the sea, forming surreal caves and underwater tunnels that divers can swim through.

Speaking of diving, this is what the Similans are famous for. With over 500 coral species, 650 types of fish, and visibility often stretching to 30 metres, it’s like swimming through an aquarium. Whale sharks, manta rays, sea turtles—it’s all on the cards. Whether you're a seasoned diver or just starting out, the underwater world here is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

The islands are open to visitors from October to May, giving the marine ecosystem time to rest during the low season. You can stay on a liveaboard dive boat for a full immersion (literally) or opt for basic park-run accommodation on a few of the islands. Either way, you’ll fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up with the sunrise.

And it’s not just about diving. The Similans have hiking trails, jungle viewpoints, and deserted beaches where you might not see another soul for hours. Conservation is a big focus here, with visitor limits, bans on harmful products, and ongoing efforts to keep this unique environment protected.

If you're after that edge-of-the-world feeling and some of the best diving in Thailand, the Similan Islands are as close to untouched as it gets.
