Unique, white domed pavilions look out onto the Indian Ocean

The open-air style of this resort creates a sense of going ‘back to nature’

Location: Set in the Kendwa area on Zanzibar’s north-west coast, Kilindi enjoys a peaceful, elevated position above a pristine stretch of beach. Surrounded by lush gardens and facing the Indian Ocean, it’s perfectly placed for sunsets and sea breezes. The location combines seclusion with easy access to local highlights, including Stone Town and nearby islands.

Rooms: Kilindi features 15 bright, domed pavilions, designed with a blend of Middle Eastern curves and Scandinavian minimalism – originally created for ABBA’s Benny Andersson. Each pavilion is spread over two separate structures: a breezy bedroom and a sea-facing bathroom with a rainfall shower. Outside, private plunge pools, open-air lounges and ocean-view patios create plenty of space to unwind. Every guest is also looked after by a personal butler.

Amenities: Dining is tailored to your preferences, whether it’s by the pool, on the beach or in the privacy of your pavilion. The spa offers a wide menu of treatments focused on relaxation, detox and wellbeing, all in peaceful garden surrounds.

Activities: Staff can organise everything from snorkelling, diving and dhow cruises to spice farm tours and guided visits to Stone Town. Or you can simply stay put and enjoy the calm – the beach here is one of Zanzibar’s best.

Sustainability: Kilindi places a strong emphasis on responsible tourism, from sourcing ingredients locally to employing and training staff from the surrounding community. Low-impact design and thoughtful water and energy use also help to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

In March Zanzibar experiences a period of long rains - showers become more frequent and it can be very wet from the middle of March.

The long rains make April a mixed month to travel, as beaches along the Indian Coastline become very hot and wet. Activities like scuba diving take a turn, with water clarity decreasing due to the weather. We would recommend not travelling during this time.

May

Temperatures during May are high, with strong winds and continual rainfall. If you travel during this time you won't witness the best of Zanzibar.

June, the wet season is finally over, temperatures are cooler making it a beautiful time to lounge on the beach or explore the culturally rich Stone Town. Sporadic rainfall may occur across the month.

November brings the arrival of the summer rains and winds, but if you're a keen fisherman, billfish season kicks off. Otherwise, it is the best time to swim with the mighty whale shark and to go coral reef diving.
