One of the most off-the-grid places to visit, ideal for seeing native wildlife in the forest and sea
Location: Chumbe Island lies 6km off the coast of Zanzibar and around 30km from mainland Tanzania. Surrounded by turquoise waters and set within a protected marine park, it’s home to ancient forest, historic buildings and one of East Africa’s most biodiverse coral reefs. Access is by boat from Zanzibar Island.
Rooms: Accommodation here is anything but ordinary. Chumbe Lodge offers seven eco-designed bungalows tucked into the forest canopy, with sea views and clever sustainable features. Each one uses solar power and rainwater harvesting, and includes a private bathroom, bedroom, lounge, hammock and open front wall so you can fall asleep to the sound of the sea.
Amenities: The main lodge building houses the restaurant and education centre, set in a lovingly restored historic building. Meals are freshly prepared with a mix of Zanzibari, Arabic, Indian and African influences. There’s no Wi-Fi, which is very much the point – it’s a place to disconnect and slow down.
Activities: Snorkelling is a highlight here, with over 200 coral species and 440 types of fish found in the surrounding marine reserve. On land, nature walks explore the island’s forest, home to rare species including the giant Coconut Crab. Guests can also visit the old lighthouse and mosque, or simply relax by the tide pools as the beach reveals its secrets.
Sustainability: Chumbe Island Coral Park is a globally recognised model for sustainable tourism. It’s the world’s first financially self-sustaining marine protected area, with eco-architecture, conservation initiatives and environmental education at its heart. Every stay directly supports local outreach and reef protection programmes.
