The perfect safari holiday in a Malaria Free area

The Waterberg Region in Limpopo Province is an area teeming with wildlife and spectacular scenery

A non-malarial area of rocky mountains, forests and open plains, the Waterberg region is a superb destination for families as well as anyone looking to relax and enjoy a few days taking in some of the most beautiful vistas that the North of the country has to offer.

There is wildlife here, although it is far more dispersed than in the more prominent safari areas, so a visit here is perhaps best combined with some time in the nearby Madikwe Game Reserve, where you can have your fill of big game viewing, before slowing the pace down somewhat in the Waterberg.

It is a great area for walking, with the absence of predators in the majority of the reserves meaning long hikes along the plains can be enjoyed, stopping to learn more about the abundant flora and rare fauna that the area supports. Indeed, it is regarded as one of the best areas in South Africa to spot rare antelope species such as roan and sable, as well as being a superb sanctuary for rhino.

Horse riding is very prominent on Waterberg safaris, with a chance for riders of all abilities to explore with exceptional local guides and get up close and personal with all manner of wildlife. Old rock art sites can be found around the region, there are some lovely hikes to enjoy and certain Waterberg lodges even have access to their own helicopters to whisk guests up to mountain tops where they can enjoy picnic lunches and sundowner drinks.

This is a truly stunning area, much under-visited but somewhere guests can really relax in beautiful lodges and enjoy some ‘wind down’ time on a luxury Waterberg holiday after what will have been a busy few days on safari.
