Stretching over 400kms from Durban all the way up to the border with Mozambique, the KwaZulu-Natal beaches and coastline is an incredibly varied area, offering experiences that will appeal to all visitors.
For pure relaxation with all facilities laid on, the area immediately north of Durban is a superb place to spend some time, with incredible hotels to enjoy in the upmarket suburb of Umhlanga, and some lovely resort-style hotels around Balito and Shaka’s Rock.
Further up the coast the shoreline of Lake St Lucia is dotted with all manner of places to stay and there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Locals rate St Lucia as a wonderful spot to fish, and you can enjoy boat cruises on the lake, walking, quad biking and birding trips. For those pushed for time it is also a great base for day safaris in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park.
The nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a paradise for nature lovers, with wild beaches, bird-rich forests and little lakes to explore by boat with expert guides. Between November and March each year the beaches in this part of the world are turtle nesting sites, with guides able to take guests down to witness young turtles hatching and making their first tentative steps down to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
