Makakatana Bay Main Lodge

Makakatana Bay Lodge

Quiet, intimate safari lodge in a magical location

In St. Lucia wetlands on the Elephant Coast

Game drives, boating in Lake St Lucia, and a swim in the Indian Ocean, all within a one hour drive – this lodge offers it all, with warmth and modern comforts.

Makakatana Bay Lodge is named after a Zulu Chief called "Chief Mhakhakhathana", who lived in the area many years ago. The lodge has contemporary timber architecture and the walls are adorned with the owner’s artwork. The owners, Hugh and Leigh-Ann Morrison, are the fourth generation at Makakatana and are proud to share this piece of paradise with their guests. Makakatana is very accessible from the main road and many guests self-drive to the lodge. Within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site, Richards Bay Airport is a one-hour-and-twenty-minute drive from Makakatana Bay Lodge.

The five Standard rooms are bright and spacious, integrating comfort and luxury with the natural environment. Set in the dune forest, the grounds surrounding the luxury suites are frequented by warthog, red duiker, nyala, bush babies, and a variety of bird life. The two Family Rooms both sleep a maximum of 4 guests each. The main room has a king bed, and the interleading room has two twin beds. The Honeymoon Room is situated privately with views out onto the vlei. Romantic and intimate, the room is the perfect retreat after a day spent in the bush or exploring the magnificent area. The main lodge is the heart of Makakatana, a communal area with personal service designed for relaxation and comfort. All game drives leave from the main lodge, and all meals are served on either the raised deck wrapping around the lodge, or at the 'boma' alongside. The lodge has a bar, a nearby wine cellar (affectionately called the 'old crab house') and a nearby private bush pool on the edge of Lake St Lucia.

Upon arrival at Makakatana Bay Lodge, experienced guides will take you on an afternoon game drive before enjoying a delicious dinner and an evening under the African stars. Over the next few days, cruise along the narrows of Lake St. Lucia. Dip your feet in the warm Indian Ocean at one of the most pristine coastlines in South Africa. End the day with a spectacular night drive looking at the stars and searching for the leopard, hyena, porcupine and other nocturnal animals.
