Savour quality wildlife sightings galore
Location:
Set beside the Mandrare River and surrounded by sisal plantations, Berenty Lodge is a rustic, family-run retreat within one of Madagascar’s oldest and most celebrated private reserves. Though the drive from Fort Dauphin takes around four hours on bumpy roads, for which we recommend bringing a neck pillow, the reward is immediate immersion in tamarind gallery forest and spiny bush rich with wildlife.
Rooms:
The lodge offers simple but spacious en-suite bungalows, with newer units offering more space and some fitted with air-conditioning. Furnishings are basic yet comfortable, and showers are generously sized. The focus is on functionality and proximity to nature rather than frills.
Amenities:
The open-air restaurant is a highlight, offering hearty, home-style meals with river views and regular lemur visitors (you may need to guard your plate). There’s also a small bar and shaded seating areas ideal for relaxing between walks. Wi-Fi is not included as part of the experience, allowing you to enjoy the lodge’s charming simplicity and the rare closeness to nature that it provides.
Activities:
Guests can explore broad, flat trails through tamarind woods and spiny forest, ideal for seeing habituated lemurs and other endemic wildlife up close. Optional visits to a cultural museum and nearby sisal factory offer insight into the region’s heritage.
Sustainability:
Berenty Reserve has a long-standing conservation ethos. The lodge remains low-impact, employing local staff and protecting its unique habitats through responsible tourism and education.
