Highlands & Escarpments
Explore Angola’s dramatic highlands, mountain passes, and vast southern landscapes.
Huíla Province is one of the most visually rewarding regions for holidays in Angola, combining dramatic escarpments, winding mountain roads, elevated plateaus, and huge open landscapes that feel remarkably untouched. Centred around Lubango in southern Angola, the region offers a completely different atmosphere to the coastline and lowlands around Luanda, with cooler temperatures, clearer air, and a strong sense of space throughout.
The region’s standout highlight is the Serra da Leba, one of Angola’s most iconic roads. A series of tight switchbacks cut dramatically through the escarpment, opening out into sweeping views across the plains below. The drive itself is one of the defining experiences of travelling through southern Angola and works particularly well combined with the Namib Desert and Iona National Park, where the landscape gradually shifts from green highlands into increasingly dry desert terrain.
Close to Lubango, the Tundavala Gap offers another extraordinary viewpoint, where the plateau drops sharply away into the distant lowlands below. The scale here is difficult to appreciate until you are standing at the edge itself, with very little development or infrastructure interrupting the landscape.
Beyond the scenery, Huíla also provides opportunities to experience a more traditional side of Angola, particularly in surrounding rural communities where daily life remains closely connected to the land. Combined with regions such as Benguela and the Lobito Coast, Huíla forms one of the strongest and most varied parts of any wider Angola itinerary.
