Kissama National Park
Experience Angola’s wildlife landscapes just south of Luanda.
Kissama National Park (also known locally as Quiçama) offers a unique perspective on Angola, combining diverse ecosystems such as wildlife, wetlands, river systems, and open savannah within relatively easy reach of Luanda. Located a few hours south of the capital, it is Angola’s most accessible national park and an important part of the country’s long-term conservation story.
Unlike more established safari destinations elsewhere in Africa, Kissama still feels early and exploratory. Wildlife sightings can be unpredictable, but that is part of the experience. Rather than focusing purely on game viewing, travel here is more about understanding Angola’s recovering wilderness areas and seeing a landscape that is slowly re-establishing itself after decades of conflict.
The park itself is diverse, featuring riverine forests, open grasslands, wetlands, and coastal influences that all shape the environment. Conservation projects over recent years have helped reintroduce species such as elephants, giraffes, and antelope, while the nearby Kwanza River adds opportunities for birdlife and boat-based experiences.
Kissama works best as a short extension from Luanda and the Atlantic Coast, either at the beginning or end of a wider itinerary. It combines particularly well with more remote regions such as the Namib Desert and Iona National Park, adding another layer to the overall Angola experience.
