Waterfalls & Highland Landscapes
Discover Angola’s dramatic waterfalls, rural landscapes, and striking inland scenery
Malanje and Kalandula Falls offer a completely different perspective on Angola, where greener landscapes, powerful waterfalls, and dramatic rock formations replace the dry escarpments and desert scenery found further south. Located inland to the east of Luanda, this region adds real contrast to wider Angola holidays and works particularly well for travellers interested in landscapes, photography, and overland exploration.
The standout highlight is Kalandula Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Africa by volume and width. Fed by the Lucala River, the falls plunge around 105 metres into the valley below and stretch nearly 400 metres across, creating an immense wall of water that is particularly dramatic during and after the rainy season.
What makes Kalandula especially remarkable is how little known it still feels. Despite its scale, many visitors find themselves almost entirely alone at the viewpoints, something increasingly rare at a waterfall of this size. Unlike many of Africa’s more developed natural attractions, there is very little infrastructure here, which only adds to the atmosphere and sense of remoteness.
Nearby, the black rock formations of Pungo Andongo rise sharply from the surrounding plains, creating one of Angola’s most unusual landscapes. The area also carries important historical significance linked to Queen Nzinga, one of Angola’s most influential historical figures.
The wider Malanje region is shaped by agriculture, forests, and rural communities, offering a noticeably slower pace than the coast or capital. Combined with Luanda and the Atlantic Coast or the Huíla highlands, Malanje adds another layer to the overall Angola experience, showing just how varied the country’s landscapes can bes.
