Visiting local community projects is a fantastically fulfilling experience when you're on safari. Reteti is a community run elephant sanctuary just a couple of hours away from Saruni Samburu, and Saruni Rhino, and well worth a visit.
Who are Reteti Elephant Sanctuary?
"Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Samburu County of northern
Kenya home to the first community owned elephant orphanage in Africa.
Designed to Rescue and release orphaned and abandoned elephant
calves, whilst creating much needed benefits to the local people that live
alongside them. The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, is the representation of the
communities standing up united for wildlife, in recognition of the value that
they can cultivate.
The orphaned elephant that are cared for by the Samburu community, are symbols of a new wave of thinking about wildlife and the environment, that goes far beyond traditional conservation methods, and dives deeper into the core value of what nature represents."
How to get there?
Guests staying at Saruni Samburu can pay a visit to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in neighbouring Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy located in the remote Mathews Range among Kenya’s second largest elephant population. The excursion needs to be arranged in advance.
By Land
The drive to and from the lodge is absolutely spectacular as it passes past Mount Ololokwe, with expansive views of the Matthews Range, towards Sera. You'll also pass through into a lush forest before you reach the Sanctuary at the foot of the Matthews.
You can also visit the elephant sanctuary from Saruni Rhino.
By Air
Saruni guests can now fly from the Kalama (Saruni Samburu) or Sera (Saruni Rhino) airstrips directly to the elephant sanctuary. The scenic flight gives you a different perspective of the wild undiscovered North of Kenya, and the added bonus of an aerial safari can only be a good thing. The Cessna 206 is great as a bush plane because the wings are above the windows which allows for unobstructed viewing of the stunning scenery below. Guests can opt to extend their flight time for 20 minutes and enjoy a scenic air excursion.
