Introduction
At the heart of Kamba African Rainforest Experiences is a team of exceptional female eco-guides who are redefining the world of eco-tourism and conservation. These women are not only leaders in their field, but they are also advocates for preserving the wild, untouched beauty of the Congo Basin, sharing their passion with travellers from around the globe.
One such guide is Danike Meyer, a seasoned adventurer who has travelled from the diverse terrains of South Africa to the heart of the Odzala-Kokoua National Park.
From Kalahari sands to the dense Congo rainforest
Danike’s journey as a guide began on the stunning beaches of the Eastern Cape, where she honed her skills in interpreting the local environment. Her passion for nature has since led her across South Africa’s diverse landscapes—from coastal thickets to the mountains and even the expansive deserts of the Kalahari. But even with all of this experience, Danike’s desire for new challenges and discovery never faded. Today, she has found her ultimate adventure: the rainforests of Odzala in the Republic of Congo.
"The rural, untouched beauty and the ability to be one with nature is a life-changing experience," Danike shares. In the depths of the Congo rainforest, Danike has discovered a new kind of wilderness—one that is rich with life and mystery. Whether observing rare birds and lowland gorillas, studying aquatic life, or spotting elusive small mammals, Danike’s passion for the natural world is boundless.
For her, one of the most profound aspects of guiding in the Congo is the unparalleled opportunity for intimate wildlife encounters. “One of the best ways to view animals in their natural environment is to do it unnoticed,” she explains. “In a rural place like the Congo, your sightings are unimaginable.” From silent treks through the forest to watching gorillas move quietly through the trees, Danike has come to love the slow, deliberate pace that allows her and her safari guests to experience the rainforest without disturbing its inhabitants.
Danike’s curiosity for the flora and fauna of the Congo Basin is ever-growing. “I look forward to the continuing process of discovering and learning all about the fauna and flora,” she says, excited to explore the region’s vast biodiversity. For Danike, every day brings new opportunities to study the intricate relationships between species and ecosystems, something she eagerly shares with visitors. “To have the ability to share my ‘office’ with everyone is truly a privilege.”
Danike is just one of Kamba’s fearless female guides who are at the forefront of conservation and eco-tourism in the Congo Basin. With their deep knowledge, adventurous spirit, and commitment to protecting the environment, these women inspire travellers to engage with nature in a meaningful way. They are not only guides in beautiful lodges such as Lango, Ngaga and Mboko lodge, but also role models for future generations of eco-leaders. By sharing their love for the wild, they are helping to ensure that the pristine beauty of the Congo will continue to be preserved for years to come.
As Kamba continues to expand its impact, the dedication of guides like Danike is key to fostering a deeper understanding of conservation and the interconnectedness of life within the Congo Basin. For those who join Danike on her journeys through the forest, it’s more than just an adventure—it’s an experience that inspires lifelong appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
