Spread over a 20 acre private jungle, Gal Oya Lodge welcomes you to a rural retreat among the Vedda tribe, who are one of the few remaining indigenous forest dwelling people in Sri Lanka. This rural paradise has been built with teak and marra wood by local craftsmen using traditional techniques that have been handed down through the generations.
All the rooms are spacious with a king sized bed, an open air bathroom and a private verandah for some serious relaxation time. Dining at Gal Oya is fresh in keeping with the spirit of sourcing seasonal ingredients from nearby villages and towns. The chef rustles up authentic Sri Lankan dishes as well as Western options, and the dining pavilion has beautiful views of the jungle all around. The swimming pool is a great place for a refreshing dip, perfect for unwinding on a hot afternoon. Staff at Gal Oya Lodge have all been recruited from the local villages and are incredibly friendly and helpful, and keen to share a tale or two about the area or give advice on places to visit.
Gal Oya National Park is a fantastic place for jeep and boat safaris, as well as hiking for some beautiful views. You can also meet the Vedda tribe and find out how they live in rural Sri Lanka. The owners will happily talk about research and conservation in the area, and foodies might like to learn a bit about Sri Lankan cooking whilst staying at the lodge.
