Characterful eco-style retreat on car-free Koh Trong, offering traditional Khmer villas, island cycling and relaxed immersion in rural Mekong life.
Location
Soriyabori Resort sits on Koh Trong, a tranquil island in the Mekong River just opposite the town of Kratie in north-east Cambodia. Reached by a short boat transfer followed by tuktuk or horse cart, the setting feels intentionally removed from modern bustle, surrounded by orchards, sandy riverbanks and village life. It works particularly well as a gentle stop between Phnom Penh and Laos or the remote provinces of Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri.
Rooms
Accommodation is in a small collection of traditional Khmer wooden villas, built using local craftsmanship and natural materials to recreate the feel of an old Cambodian village. Rooms are simple yet atmospheric, with hardwood floors, antiques, large windows and private terraces overlooking the gardens. They are naturally ventilated with fans rather than air-conditioning, in keeping with the breezy riverside climate and low-impact ethos.
Facilities
Facilities are intentionally low-key, centred around a leafy garden swimming pool and an elevated restaurant and bar with views across the property and sunsets beyond. Dining blends Khmer, Asian and European dishes, and there is a small boutique showcasing local handicrafts. Complimentary bicycles encourage easy exploration of the island’s quiet lanes and villages.
Activities
Experiences here focus on slow, authentic immersion. Guests can cycle around Koh Trong’s orchards and pagodas, visit floating villages, take boat trips on the Mekong or simply relax by the pool watching rural life unfold. The resort is also a good base for spotting the rare Irrawaddy dolphins near Kratie or for continuing overland journeys through north-east Cambodia.
Sustainability
Soriyabori was created to preserve traditional Khmer architecture and craftsmanship at a time when many wooden homes are being replaced by concrete structures. Its small scale, natural ventilation, and integration with island life help minimise environmental impact while supporting local employment and community-based tourism on Koh Trong.
