Kuching Holidays

Kuching is one of our favourite starting points for a holiday in Borneo. It’s laid-back, easy to explore, and full of personality – a city where traditional kampung villages sit alongside colonial architecture, lively food markets, and a beautiful riverfront promenade that comes alive at sunset.

What we love about Kuching is how it gives you a gentle introduction to Borneo’s culture and wildlife without ever feeling touristy. It’s compact and walkable, with great local guides, characterful hotels, and plenty of authentic experiences close by. You can stroll along the Sarawak River, try a bowl of spicy laksa, and visit museums that bring the region’s history and diverse communities to life – all in a day.

We recommend using Kuching as a base for exploring further afield. Head to Bako National Park for a day of jungle trekking and coastal views (keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys), or visit Semenggoh Nature Reserve to see rescued orangutans swinging through the trees. You can also take a boat trip to traditional Bidayuh or Iban longhouses, where you’ll get a glimpse of life in the interior.

It’s a great spot for couples, families, or solo travellers looking to combine culture, wildlife, and a more relaxed pace. Kuching is a place that draws you in slowly – and keeps surprising you the longer you stay.
