Pole-Pole in Swahili means ‘take it easy’ which is exactly what you will do when you visit Pole Pole Lodge. Located in the Chole Bay area on the southeast coast of Mafia Island, Pole Pole Lodge lies within a tropical garden overlooking a spectacular view of white sands and Indian Ocean. This is no typical beach holiday and is considered one of the most exclusive eco-resorts in the world.

Blending seamlessly into the hillside, Pole Pole Lodge accommodation comprises seven elegant and spacious bungalow suites. Two of the bungalows are designed for families and containin two rooms separated by a shared bathroom (the lodge welcomes children aged 10 and older). The bungalows are relatively simple by modern standards, but perfectly comfortable with large, private verandas. As well as providing views of the sea, the restaurant serves a combination of diverse cuisine with an Italian touch of class, and the resort will cater for special dietary requirements whenever possible.

In the sunniest stretch of Pole Pole Lodge, the swimming pool is reminiscent of a traditional Arabic sailing dhow, with weathered parts of old sailing boats integrated into its features. For more relaxation you can enjoy a variety of rejuvenating essential-oil massages in the Alasiri Spa. More adventurous activities available at Pole Pole include: a 4-wheel drive across the island, through villages and changing landscapes, up to the northern tip where a lighthouse stands; daily boat excursions to isolated islands and sandbanks; or light trekking. Mafia Island Marine Park was established as the first Marine Park in Tanzania, and the warm, safe waters of the inland bays and lagoons are a paradise for both expert and beginner scuba divers as well as those simply wishing to snorkel.
