Covering 3,600 km² of open grassland in Western Zambia, the Liuwa Plain National Park is a truly breathtaking part of the country, well off the main safari circuit but a real joy for any intrepid travellers who make the journey out here. Liuwa Plain is the former hunting ground of Lubosi Lewanika, the King of the local Lozi people whose proclamation helped protect the area from poaching way back in the 1880s. This legacy has continued through protection from the Zambian Government, the renowned NGO African Parks and the private sector to create one of Africa’s longest-running conservation success stories.

The park is home to Africa’s second largest wildebeest migration, a huge cheetah population and plenty of lion. The diversity on offer really needs to be seen to be believed, and a luxury Liuwa Plain holiday really will be one to remember. Indeed, it is likely the only park within Africa where hyena are the apex predator, and it boasts the densest population of endangered wattled cranes amongst the 300 birds in the park, as well as rare antelope such as oribi and roan.

With just one permanent camp within the park, along with the possibility to enjoy mobile camping, this is an incredibly remote area which few visitors know about, let alone visit. A tailor made Liuwa Plain safari is undoubtedly an upscale experience, with expensive flights required to get there and the one camp is amongst the most costly in Zambia, but for visitors who have done plenty of Africa and think there is “nothing else” to do here, Liuwa Plain will surely see a swift revaluation of that thought.
