Our specialists say:

Once reachable only through month-long Royal Mail Ship voyages, now conveniently accessed by weekly flights from Johannesburg. Enjoy hikes through lush highlands, explore the charming Jamestown, encounter fascinating marine life, and visit historic gems like Great Longwood.

One of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth, this little volcanic dot in the South Atlantic has been shaped by isolation, nature and history in equal measure. It’s a place where you can hike cloud forests one day, dive with whale sharks the next, and still be back in time for dinner with the locals.

Tamara, our St Helena specalist says:

“From climbing Jacob’s Ladder to walking through cloud forest at Diana’s Peak, St Helena is full of surprises. One day you’re snorkelling with whale sharks, the next you’re standing in Napoleon’s former home or meeting Jonathan, the world’s oldest giant tortoise. It’s remote, welcoming, and completely unlike anywhere else I’ve been.”

Your adventure begins with a short stopover in Johannesburg before you board the weekly flight to the island - 3,000 kilometres from anywhere. For the next week, explore with expert local guides and get to know the island’s stories, from Napoleon’s exile to the lives of the “Saints” who call this place home. Hike through green highlands and past windswept cliffs, meet Jonathan the tortoise (who has been around since before the lightbulb), and snorkel or dive in warm, clear waters where dolphins, rays and rare marine species abound.

St Helena offers something increasingly rare in today’s world: true disconnection. There are no crowds, no chain restaurants, no cruise ships. Just rich history, wild nature and a way of life that’s completely its own.
