Gorongosa National Park is located at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, in the heart of Mozambique. The park covers more than 4,000 square km, and includes the Urema Valley. Gorongosa National Park is also contains one of Mozambique’s densest wildlife populations, thanks to its successful conservation project.
Gorongosa National Park has a vast species list, assisted by re-introductions of wildlife through the conservation programme. Lions are present in the park, and swelling in numbers. Elephants are a regular sighting along with several species of antelope
Birding at Gorongosa is excellent. Endemic birds such as the Collared Palm Thrush, the Green Coucal, Narina Trogon and Spotted Creeper. Earlier in 2008, at one of the Gorongosa waterholes, a birder spotted over 130 species in one sitting! Amazing! Lake Urema provides a home to a huge number of water birds and one can literally sit for hours watching fish eagles swoop down, spoonbills forage, jacana’s tip toe across lilies, herons and stock pluck fish and much more…
Gorongoas is easily accessible by a short flight, or by road. This, along with its spectacular wildlife, makes it a go to destination in Mozambique.
