The greater Gorongosa region is situated at the southernmost end of the Great African Rift Valley. The National Park in Gorongosa is a fragile national treasure of Mozambique. Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge, also known as Chitengo Camp, is Gorongosa’s main public camp first constructed in 1941 and hosted thousands of visitors from all over the world until 1983, when Mozambique’s civil war shut it down. It was mostly destroyed during the war, but re-opened in 1995. It is now being restored and rebuilt with many modern conveniences.
At Chitengo Camp you can choose from 18 newly constructed thatched rooms, with a choice of twin or king-sized beds, with a total capacity for 36 people. Each room has mosquito nets, air-conditioning and an en-suite toilet, including shower facilities with hot water. Chitengo Camp has a reasonably priced bar and restaurant serving authentic Mozambican breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Breakfast is included in the price of the cabanas.
Some of the activities available from the Camp include self-drive and guided game drives, where you can witness the scenic splendour and magnificent array of wildlife species, as well as guided trips to Mount Gorongosa including visits to the spectacular rainforest and waterfalls. The park is closed during the rainy season and generally opens between April and November.
