Most of sub-Saharan Africa’s safari destinations are coming to the end of their heavy rain season, apart from in East Africa where the rains are slowly starting to build. It’s a pivotal time in the safari calendar as you can definitely feel the imminent change of the seasons approaching.
This is a great time to travel, providing good value for money and in some places a less crowed safari experience.
South Africa
This is the tail end of the summer in South Africa as winter starts to draw in and it is a good time for avoiding the crowds, which makes it a great time of year to visit the Kruger National Park and the private concessions of the Sabi Sands. Morning safari activities can be a little chilly so it’s a good idea to layer up.
Tanzania
Although this is the start of the heavy rains in Tanzania, it’s still a relatively good time to go as the vast herds of the Great Migration are plump with an abundance of young wildebeest, zebra and other plains game. Travelling during this time can be good value for money.
March is still calving season in the southern regions of the Serengeti tens of thousands of wildebeest calves born during this month, along with the thousands of zebra foals and antelope lambs being born means predator activity is at a premium, attracting cheetah, lion, leopard and hyena. The chances of seeing predators hunting whilst on safari is quite high during this time as the abundance of food will help sustain their own young families.
The wildlife amphitheatre of the Ngorogoro Crater is also a definite bucket list destination in Tanzania with it's high densities of predator and prey species alike.
Namibia
Whilst Namibia remains a genuine year-round destination, there is something magical about a trip here in March and not just because you avoid the busy season which starts in April and runs all the way through to November. The summers rains will have passed by now, but there is still a tinge of green wherever you travel, and the normally stark plains of Damaraland are especially beautiful. Game viewing remains excellent in Etosha and wildlife numbers increase around Sossusvlei as well owing to the added surface water - all in all, an amazing time to visit this stunningly beautiful country.
