The very centre of the Islamic world
Found to the east of Jeddah, the ancient city of Mecca sits at the very epicentre of Islam and is the destination of the annual Haji Pilgrimage
Mecca is undoubtedly the holiest and most important city in the Islamic world, home to the Grand Mosque and the city where the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. Muslims from around the world orientate themselves towards Mecca for their 5 daily prayers and the Haji Pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the five pillars of Islam and is undertaken at varying points during the Islamic calendar. Shorter, year-round pilgrimages, known as the Umrah are also undertaken by Muslims from around the world.
Found 90kms inland from the port city of Jeddah, in the west of Saudi Arabia, access to Mecca is strictly confined to Muslims with no visitors of other faiths permitted to enter the city.
Muslim visitors are able to enter the fabled Grand Mosque as part of their pilgrimage and perform the Tawaf, which involves walking around the holy Kaaba seven times. All pilgrims must be properly attired for this part of their visit, with the trip here being the most significant event in their lives. As well as the Grand Mosque there are a number of excellent museums in Mecca, all of them dedicated to promoting and maintaining the faith of the pilgrims who make the epic journey to the very centre of the Islamic world.
