When the British royals travel to North East India they stay at the Diphlu River Lodge. This is a fantastic lodge on the edge of Kaziranga National Park in Assam.
Cottages are raised on stilts and are constructed from bamboo and wood with thatched roofs. This is all in the traditional style, yet the cottages also have modern amenities like air-conditioning, comfortable beds, fridge and attached bathrooms. Glass doors open onto your own private verandah.
The lovely common area is called the “Machan”, meaning “jungle area”, and this is a place to dine, chat, chill on the sofa and enjoy a cuppa or a drink from the bar.
There are daily jeep safaris (morning and evening) into Kaziranga National Park, the unique home of the one-horned rhino and plenty other wildlife – you may spot a tiger here if you are lucky. Boat safaris from the lodge also offer the chance of seeing the endangered Ganges river dolphin. You can also visit the villages nearby and in the evening enjoy a barbecue along with traditional Assamese dances performed by the bonfire.
