A great stopover in Southern India
Take in temples, pay your respects to an apostle at the basilica, and tuck into some seriously good local food
Formerly known as Madras, Chennai is a good place to fly in and out of in South India. It’s a big city with a warm sea breeze, amazing food and plenty to see on your stopover. There are colourful Hindu temples typical of the region, the hill on which the Apostle Thomas was martyred, and the basilica at San Thome – one of only three churches in the world built on the tomb of an apostle - the others are at Rome and Santiago de Compostella.
Chennai is quite the place if you are into South Indian food – it is here that you will find some of the best local vegetarian dishes like masala dosa, vada and idli sambhar.
