Originally the residence of the Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, Ahilya fort was converted into a hotel in the year 2000. This 18th century property is situated above the Narmada river in Maheshwar, Central India. Made up of several buildings and acres of beautiful gardens and courtyards, Ahilya is a stunning location, suitable for families and it’s close proximity to the town means that guests can easily walk into Maheshwar. The easiest way to access Ahilya Fort Hotel is a road transfer from the city of Indore.
The accommodation is scattered among the six buildings that make up the hotel, and while there is a range of different room options to choose from, they are all air conditioned and contain comfortable beds, spacious en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers, fridges and tea and coffee making facilities. Guests are free to wander around the various gardens and courtyards, which contain plenty of quiet, peaceful spots where you can sit and take in your surroundings or read a book. Meals are eaten outside, at a different area of the gardens every night. The lunch time menu is usually made up of European dishes, whereas traditional Indian meals are served in the evening.
There is wide range of things to do in the hotel and the surrounding areas. The hotel’s spa offers various treatments given by fully trained massesurs, or you have the option of attending a yoga session. You can go on a boat excursion, complete with refreshments, on the Marmada river or visit some of the local villages for a cultural experience. There is the also the opportunity to visit a nearby school or the organic farm that produces the majority of the hotel’s food. Alternatively, you can visit some important historical sites such as Mandu and Baji Roa Samadhi.
