Siwandu Safari

Luxury Southern Tanzania Safari and Beach

11 days from £6,985pp (excl. international flights)

Ruaha  – Selous  – Swahili Coast Beach

Get away with the Selous Safari Company

A luxury safari itinerary that includes three of Tanzania’s quieter locations… The Ruaha National Park, the Selous Game Reserve and the beaches of the East Coast.

This itinerary is a real treat! Ideal for couples, families or groups of friends; this really is suitable for everyone. It is a fantastic combination that works well for anyone looking to combine safari and beach - with a little added luxury.

This trip includes two of the most incredible untouched areas of protected wilderness in Tanzania which do not get nearly the same volume of tourist traffic as do the parks of northern Tanzania. The Selous Game Reserve is the size of Switzerland and has the highest population of elephant of any reserve in Tanzania, whist Ruaha National Park is just teeming with wildlife and offers a true off the beaten track nature experience.

The beach part of the trip continues with the same natural and off the beaten track theme, staying in a beautiful beach lodge that is made from natural materials and blends into its perfectly tropical environment on a beautiful white sandy beach.

If it is a quiet and relaxed time staying in exclusive and off the beaten track locations then this trip is for you.

The itinerary…

1: Outbound travel

Fly, usually overnight, to Dar El Salaam.

2: Ruaha National Park

Jongomero Bedroom

Tented Camp at Jongomero

On arrival in to Dar El Salaam, you will transfer to the domestic terminal for your flight to the Ruaha National Park. The flight is just under 3 hours and it beautifully scenic as you fly into the depths of Tanzania. As you touch down at the Jongomero private air strip you will be you will be greeted by your guide and driven to camp in time for a traditional safari lunch.

Your home for the next three nights is the Jongomero Camp, where you will check into one of the eight luxury tents. This secluded and very well-equipped camp provides the perfect base in between game drives, relax in the lounge or by the pool – but watch out for the thirsty elephants!

Once you have settled in and explored camp, you will set out of your first game drive in the Ruaha before returning to camp for a private dinner and a comfy night’s sleep, dozing off listening to the sounds of the bush.

3-4: Safari Days in Ruaha

Jongomero Sundowners

Sundowners at Jongomero

Each evening you will discuss the next day’s activities with the camp managers, making plans for walking or driving safaris and deciding when and where to have lunch.

Jongomero camp is situated 70 kms from the next camp so your safari experience is private and exclusive, the chances of seeing another vehicle are very remote. The Ruaha National Park is often overlooked by many safari goers which means that it is certainly one of the quieter parks to visit. It boasts a very impressive big cat population as well as vast herds of elephants and big packs of wild dogs. The Ruaha is also a great destination for birders, with over 500 species of bird already on record here. There are very few places in Tanzania that offer this exclusive and rewarding experience.

Suggestion – A dawn game walk in the dry season is a must, meander through the dry riverbeds with an expert guide, listening to fascinating stories about the local flora, fauna, insects, birds and animals.

After each day’s activities, retire to camp to relax and indulge in the delicious food and drink available.

5: Selous Game Reserve

Siwandu Tent Veranda

Siwandu Tent

Today it’s time to move on to your second, very different, safari experience. After breakfast you will return to the airstrip for a 90min flight to the Selous Game Reserve. You will be greeted at the airport and taken to Siwandu, which will be your home for the next three nights.

Siwandu is perfect for forgetting all the troubles of the modern world and being fully immersed in nature. Check into one of the luxury, very spacious, tents and enjoy the camp facilities which include a pool, bar and lounge.

6-7: Safari Days

Siwandu Game Walk

Game Walk at Siwandu

The next two days will be spent exploring the Selous Game reserve in one of the many ways that Siwandu offer, from game walks, game drives, boat safaris and fishing trips.

The Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa (twice the size of Belgium) but visitor numbers are much lower than the Serengeti, which ensures that you have a quieter, more private game experience. With an elephant population of 50,000 and approx. 5000 leopards in the park the Selous has an excellent game viewing experience on offer.

You will return to Siwandu camp each night for drinks and dinner around the camp fire.

8-10: Beach Time at Ras Katani

Ras Kutani Beach

Ras Kutani Beach

After breakfast on day eight it’s time to say goodbye to Safari life as you take a short (1 hour) flight to Dar El Salaam where you will be met by a driver and taken on a fascinating road transfer (approx. 90mins) to Ras Katani – You will arrive just in time for lunch.

The next few days involve relaxation and indulgence at Ras Katani – a small coastal castaway retreat where you can arrange a massage at the spa, visit the local village, kayak, snorkel or just sit and watch the world go by! Keeping an eye out for any hatching turtles on the beach or passing humpback whales out to sea.

Enjoy the line caught fresh fish and seafood at the beach bar and watch the sunset with a cocktail, appreciate you last few days of peace on the Swahili coast.

11: Home time

After breakfast you will fly back from the Ras Kutani Airstrip to Dar El Salam airport for your onward flight home. Most flights back to Europe are overnight. Bon Voyage everyone.
