in the heart of the Natal Battlefields
Relax in the flowing space of contemporary but homely suites and family cottages.
Three Trees at Spioenkop is a family-owned-and-run small luxury lodge situated at the foot of the Drakensberg mountain range, and in the heart of the Natal Battlefields. The lodge overlooks a stunning valley of the Spioenkop Game Reserve, which is host to rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland and numerous other antelope species. A bird list of 300 species has been recorded in the area and viewing can be done from your private deck at each suite. Close to the base of Van Reenens pass, the lodge is also the ideal half-way stop between Johannesburg & Durban.
Three Tree Hill comprises six luxury en-suite rooms (all equipped with roof fans, heaters, down duvets and the finest percale linen), one- two bed roomed family suite, a swimming pool, a main dining room, a spacious sitting room with a traditional wide veranda as well as game viewing deck. The main lodge living area has an open-plan design, with four sets of large double doors leading onto the veranda.
Activities include battlefield tours, hiking in the Drakensberg, local walks and horseback treks. Previous owners Andrew Ardington, and the late David Rattray (world-renowned Anglo-Zulu War historian and owner of Fugitives’ Drift Lodge) built the lodge in 1999. Simon Blackburn & Ron Gold continue to share the events of this dramatic time on the Anglo-Boer War history tours with guests that visit Three Trees. For the children there is a trampoline, jungle gym and sand pit.
