The perfect spot from which to explore the wilds of the stunning De Hoop Nature Reserve
The De Hoop Nature Reserve is a real hidden gem of a destination, tucked down on the very southern part of the country and known only to locals and in-the-know visitors. For many years it was a day trip destination with few accommodation options in the park, which changed recently with the addition of Morukuru Beach Lodge.
Nestled atop grass coastal dune land with sweeping views across the beach and to the swirling waters of the Indian Ocean beyond, this is a stunning property, the very epitome of a modern beach house and a wonderful spot to spend a few days. The bedrooms are spacious, light and airy with stacking doors that fold out to take full advantage of the incredible views. The feeling of space continues in to the open plan main area, where guests congregate for meals, drinks and to relax in the spacious lounge. A swimming pool shielded from the sea breezes by a wall and covered outdoor dining area are a lovely feature and especially popular in summer when it gets very warm down here. Of course, the lodge takes advantage of the wide-open spaces it is found in by offering alfresco meals when possible with the beach barbecues an especially popular offering. Food and levels of service are outstanding here, with guests pampered to their heart’s content by the charming staff.
The activities programme here is almost endless, with guests able to enjoy guided marine walks, snorkelling, walks through the inland part of the reserve to learn about the fynbos plants, mountain biking and guided nature drives. It is also a great spot for whale watching, with Southern Right Whales seen in the bay in front of the lodge between July and November each year.
