Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is located within a 15-minute drive to the headquarters of the Parc National des Volcans. It is the starting point for the gorilla trekking activities in the foothills of the mighty Virungas, a chain of volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the DR Congo. To reach the lodge, it is a three-hour drive from Kigali International Airport, and guests must walk 200m uphill from the car park (porters will carry the luggage).
The accommodation comprises six Cottages, two Suite Cottages and one Family Cottage. The cottages are very spacious and laid out to provide seclusion and privacy. They are built of stone with Rwandese terracotta tile roofs. Each cottage has a large sitting area with a fireplace, en-suite bathrooms and a sheltered veranda. The Family Cottage contains two en-suite rooms connected by a shared veranda. The main building has a lounge and snug, a dining room, a library/games room, and a shop. Three large fireplaces provide warmth, while two patio areas provide stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes.
Activities from the lodge include: Gorilla Trekking; Golden Monkey Tracking; escorted walks and mountain biking; a visit to Iby’iwacu Cultural Village; a trek to the original Dian Fossey Research Camp; a boat trip on the Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo and hikes of varying difficulties through Buhanga Sacred Forest, Mount Bisoke, Mount M'Gahinga, Mount Muhabura and Lake Ngezi.
