At the end of a secluded 12 km track lies the Dunes de Dovela eco-lodge, perched on top of large sand dunes with superb views over the Indian Ocean. It's the perfect place to unwind and relax whilst being surrounded by nature and the beautiful coast of Mozambique. The lodge has been built together with the local Chope Community and nestles nicely in the sand. It blends in well with its environment and has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
The rooms, restaurant and bar all have magnificent vistas either out over the azure waters, the rolling dunes, or the virgin coastal forest. Food is a delicious blend of Franco-Mozambican cuisine, with lots of fresh seafood and organic veggies from the gardens. Accommodation is in a tented bush camp or luxury bungalows, all are private and an ideal retreat after a day of adventure. The luxury bungalows enjoy sea views, private terraces and an outdoor shower, whilst the four semi-luxury dome tents tucked away in the forest are pitched on wooden platforms letting the occupants sleep in peace immersed in nature. Toilets and showers in the tented camp are shared, and the area has incredible views out to sea.
There are plenty of opportunities to explore the local area, including long walks on the pristine beach, snorkelling along the rocky reef, and village visits to learn about daily life in the local community. You can also relax on your private terrace and watch the Humpback Whale migration (between June and October), or take a boat out to see these majestic creatures up close and personal. It is also possible to see how the local brew 'tontone' is made from cassava flour, learn how to get water from a borehole, or walk amongst the gently swaying coconut palms. There are several footpaths around the 100 hectares of land owned by Dunes de Dovela, and you can explore with a local guide to discover the hidden treasures of the area. Keep an eye out for traditional plants, forest fruits and vervet monkeys. Bird watchers will also have fun spotting the colourful birds that live or pass through the area, with help from trained field guide Thomas Bruneau, who is also one of the lodge owners.
