Antananarivo’s first boutique hotel was once a fine Creole home and remains renowned for its exceptional restaurant. The family-run hotel has a veranda or ‘varangue’ (Creole) running the width of the building. The property is decorated with antique oil lamps, lanterns, telephones, cameras and phonographs, which creates a charming ambience. Centrally located in Antaninarenina, it’s a quick walk from the famed Hotel Colbert (worth a morning coffee stop) and not far from the presidential palace.
La Varangue has six rooms and three suites. Five rooms and two suites in the original building have wooden floors and ceilings, comfortable beds with mosquito nets, television, fan, telephone, mini-bar and phone. The room and vast suite in the addition to the house offer air-conditioning and lavish bathrooms. The stylish décor is contemporary and uncluttered. Other amenities include a flat-screen TV, tea/coffee facilities, hair-dryer, dressing gown and slippers. The delightful outdoor terrace is where most guests enjoy breakfast and the restaurant is one of the country’s best.
