Yirgalem, also known as Irgalem or Yirga 'Alem, is about 40km south of Awassa (260km south of Addis Ababa) in the Sidama zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region. It combines readily with other places in southern Ethiopia and also, with Lake Langano.
Around the bustling urban centre, the area is lush, fertile and sub-tropical. Our focus here is a stay at Aregash Lodge, a delightful rural property that run by a Greek-Ethiopian family. It's a superb place for those who just want to escape the demands of the urban rat-race. There is no TV. There are no phones in the tukuls (rooms). There is no radio or loud music. Just the sights and sounds of nature and the resident people. Aregash Lodge has gained a small but steady following of people who visit for 3 or 4 days, to unwind completely. Aregash Lodge is on a coffee plantation, and the coffee produced here rivals some of the other Ethiopian coffees which are internationally regarded as amongst the world’s best.
