As many of you will know, when you go on a safari holiday in Africa, you pay a ‘park fee’ of about £50 per person per day to enter a national park or a wildlife area.
But with COVID-19 halting most holidays to Africa this year, conservation areas are being starved of this vital source of income. As a result many are now struggling to pay the salaries of Wildlife Rangers – ironically at a time when they are most needed.
Rangers are the first line of defence against anti-poaching, and human / wildlife conflict – and without them many of Africa’s iconic species such as elephant, rhino, lion, giraffe and pangolin are at even greater risk of extinction.
Sadly we are seeing the shocking impacts already – many Rangers have been laid off and, as has been widely reported, poaching is surging across Africa.
everyone can take part in ride4rangers
A Global Ride4Rangers...
Together with friends across the travel industry and Africa lovers worldwide – we are coming together to ride (or run, walk or even horse-ride 😊) the equivalent length of Africa’s coastline – 30,000 kilometres.
And we want you get involved in anyway you can. Our aim is to raise £100,000, but we know that with your help we can do even better.
We may not be in Africa for our holidays, but we can still support the continent’s globally important wildlife areas, and the people on the ground keeping them safe.
Here are the 3 different ways you can get involved
We're cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats
OPTION 1 – Join us cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats.
Starting 15th August our team are relay cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats as part of the Ride4Rangers.
We are doing this together with staff, customers and friends of the entire Africa Travel Community in the UK.
The full LE-JOG ride takes 14 days and has been set up so that you can join us for any section from just a few miles, a half day, full day, or even more.
OPTION 2 – Do your own ride.
Support Ride4Rangers from anywhere in the world.
Whether you’re at home, on your family holiday in France – you can still take part by doing a ride where you are.
1/ Go to the Ride4Rangers website and select a distance that you will ride (or run, skip horse ride or walk… it really doesn’t matter).
2/ Set up a JustGiving appeal to support Ride4Rangers.
3/ Go Viral - get your friends and family where ever they are - to do the same. Don't forget to tag them in any social media and use #RIDE4RANGERS
OPTION 3 – Support with a donation.
If you’d like make a donation* to support our teams LE-JOG ride and help keep Rangers in the field - please visit our Ride4Rangers fundraising page.
All Monies raised will be distributed among over 60 conservation areas and entities all over Africa – and overseen by an independent steering committee composed of conservation leaders across Africa. This committee co-ordinated by UK Charity Tusk and US partner Natural State – with all Ride4Rangers funds being received by Tusk.
some great news just in
A private donor has offered to match-fund every single donation made to the Ride4Rangers challenge.
We expect details of this incredible uncapped £ for £ commitment to be released in the press by the end of the week.
Now that every donation made gets doubled - we hope you will join us urgently fundraise to help keep rangers in the field in Africa.
For lots more info about the initiative, what we're doing and how you can help, visit RIDE4RANGERS and don't forget to follow #RIDE4RANGERS on social media.
