After three long weeks in the saddle we came to a rest day in our penultimate point on our Tanzania safari - Mbeya. We had read a lot about the stunning and secluded Ngozi Crater Lake and were hoping to put our rest day to good use with a hike to see this natural wonder.
It was more difficult than we thought to get hold of answers as to how to go it alone, or to get reasonable responses about tours to Ngozi. But with some digging we found a great guide (which we would say is essential given the winding and hidden pathway to the peak!)
The hike to Ngozi Crater Lake is beautiful. And although short (2 hours up and 2 hours down), it really feels like a scramble into the wilderness. The path is frequently hidden and you have to fight your way through giant banana tree leaves, under fallen trees and over sprawling roots to get to the top.
Ngozi Crater Lake is unlike anything we had seen - it’s turquoise blues and steep volcanic sloping sides were awesome. The clouds hanging low gave an eerie edge and showed just how high the top is. All in all, a spectacular sight. And what makes it even better, nobody else was there. This lake is the kind of attraction that would be plagued with steps and ropes and hotdog stands in Europe. The kind of thing that taints the adventure and back to nature feel. But not here. We were the only people around save for a few farmers at the very base of the climb.
The beauty and serenity of Ngozi Crater Lake make it an absolute highlight of our time in Tanzania.
