Built in the 1920s, this heritage hotel was originally the summer retreat for the royal family of the Manikya dynasty, the rulers of the neighbouring state of Tripura.
Still overseen by the head of the family, Tripura Castle is a lovely old-fashioned hotel with 28 rooms, 4 restaurants and bars, pool table and private dining room.
The hotel has been refurbished but retains a homely feel with wooden interiors typical of North East India. Some of the rooms are in the former Royal Residence, with others having been renovated from the Maharaja’s printing press, armoury and royal stables – but insist on the Maharaja Suites where Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore used to stay on his many visits.
It’s a vintage Indian experience - have a cigar and a cocktail in the Mezzanine Bar. This hotel is the best option for exploring this offbeat hill station in the “Scotland of the East”.
