A really nice way to break up the drive between Amritsar and the Himalayas, with an experience of rural Punjabi life and culture.
Location
We love the setting here: Punjabiyat is found amid lush green fields in the Gurdaspur district about an hour’s drive from Amritsar in rural Punjab. Once you arrive you’ll feel like you’ve stepped out of the city and into open countryside, with golden crops and wide skies stretching all around.
Rooms
There are only four standalone cottages, each styled simply yet thoughtfully. You will find high-ceilinged rooms, a front deck for quiet moments, and a private rooftop terrace that lets you soak in those countryside views. The décor feels authentic to the region, and the overall effect is relaxed, comfortable and quite charming.
Amenities
There’s a comfortable lounge area, a veranda where you can sit with a drink or a book, and plenty of open space to take it easy. Guests mention the plunge-pool filled with fresh water from the farm irrigation system as a refreshing treat. Meals here are a highlight: hearty Punjabi fare served under trees or on the terrace.
Activities
You will have the opportunity to embrace rural life: stroll or cycle through the fields, take a tractor ride, watch the harvest or simply watch the sunset across wide open terrain. The hosts are happy to suggest or arrange experiences that connect you with the land and local community rather than just the usual sightseeing.
Sustainability
What we particularly like about Punjabiyat is its thoughtful use of traditional building materials and connection to its environment. The cottages are built using mud-bricks, local timber and natural finishes, helping them stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Additionally, the plunge-pool is filled with farm irrigation water which is later recycled back onto the fields.
