A thousand years ago Tanjore was the capital of one of South India’s greatest dynasties, the Cholas, and the architectural legacy left here in Tanjore’s temples is staggering. The Chola temples in Tanjore are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with the finest example being the great Brihadisvara Temple. Spend a day walking around, rub shoulders with Hindu pilgrims, and take in the sights. If you’re interested in temple architecture it’s also well worth making a trip to the nearby city of Trichy with its imposing Rock Fort temple.
