Fredy’s Bungalow is a cosy colonial style house on a hillside near the lake of Bhimtal in Kumaon, a green and picturesque region of the Himalayan foothills. This peaceful haven is in a forest with good mountain views, just a short drive up a track from the lake.
The original owner, a German named Fredy Smetacek Jr, was an avid butterfly collector, and much of his collection is in the bungalow itself, with more samples in the nearby Butterfly Museum.
Fredy’s Bungalow is the start of a great walking route in these hills, on which you can stay at several other village houses along the way. While you are staying at Fredy’s go for a boat ride on nearby Bhimtal lake, wander the surroundings or simply put your feet up with a good book.
