Best time to visit Cambodia
A month-by-month guide of when to visit Cambodia
Cambodia is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. The country has two distinct seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the wet season (May to October).
The peak travel period falls between November and February when the weather is cooler and drier, making it ideal for exploring iconic sites like Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh, and the beaches of Koh Rong. This is also when Cambodia hosts major festivals, including Bon Om Touk (the Water Festival) in November, celebrating the end of the monsoon with vibrant boat races.
From March to May, temperatures soar, often exceeding 35°C (95°F), but this is a great time for fewer crowds at popular attractions. The Khmer New Year in mid-April is a highlight, with nationwide celebrations, water fights, and traditional performances.
The wet season, from May to October, brings heavy rains, particularly in the afternoons, transforming the landscape into a rich, green paradise. While some roads may become difficult to navigate, this is a fantastic time for fewer tourists, lower prices, and seeing Angkor Wat surrounded by reflective pools of water. September and October are the wettest months, but also the most photogenic.
Whether you prefer cooler, dry weather or the tranquillity of the green season, Cambodia offers unique experiences throughout the year.

January & February
January and February are among the best months to visit Cambodia, with dry weather, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures ranging from 20-30°C (68-86°F). This is peak season, so expect larger crowds at Angkor Wat and higher accommodation prices. The beaches of Koh Rong and Sihanoukville are at their best, offering clear skies and calm waters. Festivals like Chinese New Year (varies by year) may bring lively celebrations, especially in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

March & April
Temperatures rise significantly in March and April, often exceeding 35°C (95°F). While it can be sweltering, this is still a good time for sightseeing with fewer crowds. April brings Cambodia’s biggest celebration, Khmer New Year, a nationwide festival featuring water fights, street parties, and traditional ceremonies. If visiting during this time, expect closures as locals celebrate. The heat makes coastal destinations like Kep and Koh Rong more appealing, offering a refreshing escape.

May & June
The wet season begins in May, bringing occasional heavy showers, particularly in the afternoons. June sees increasing rainfall, but mornings often remain dry, making it possible to explore temples and cities before the showers. The countryside starts to blossom, and visitor numbers drop, leading to quieter experiences and better travel deals. The early rainy season doesn’t typically disrupt travel, but humidity levels are high.

July & August
The monsoon is in full swing, with frequent rains that refresh the landscape and fill Cambodia’s lakes and rivers. While downpours can be intense, they usually last only a few hours, leaving time for sightseeing. Angkor Wat is especially photogenic with its moats brimming with water. The Tonlé Sap Lake is at its fullest, offering unique floating village experiences. With fewer tourists, hotels and tours are more affordable.

September & October
These are the wettest months, with heavy and prolonged rains, especially in September. Some remote areas may become difficult to access, but the countryside is at its most beautiful. Angkor Wat’s reflection in the rain-filled pools is stunning. October sees the end of the monsoon, with drier days gradually returning. Pchum Ben, the Cambodian festival of remembrance, takes place in September or October, offering a cultural insight into Buddhist traditions.

November & December
November marks the start of the dry season, with comfortable temperatures and clear skies. The famous Bon Om Touk (Water Festival) takes place in November, with vibrant boat races in Phnom Penh. December continues to offer perfect conditions for sightseeing, with warm days and cool nights. This is a popular time to visit, so booking accommodation in advance is recommended. Beaches, islands, and temples are all at their best, making this an excellent time for first-time travellers to Cambodia.
