Discover ancient palaces, volcanic islands, and vibrant street markets
South Korea reshapes itself around every kind of traveller – Gyeongbokgung's five-century-old palaces, Jeju's volcanic peaks, Seoul's street food markets and a rail network that makes it all effortless to reach.
South Korea is a destination that quietly surprises people. While its neighbours often steal the spotlight, those who choose to explore Korea are rewarded with a country where ancient traditions and cutting-edge innovation exist side by side. One moment you could be wandering through a centuries-old palace, watching the changing of the guard in traditional dress, and the next you're exploring futuristic neighbourhoods filled with independent cafés, design stores, and some of the best food in Asia. It is this contrast that makes South Korea such a fascinating place to travel.
For many, Seoul is the perfect introduction. A bustling capital that never seems to slow down, it combines royal palaces, local markets, peaceful temples and world-class museums with sleek architecture, rooftop bars and a thriving food scene. Beyond the city, however, South Korea reveals an entirely different side. Hike through the granite peaks of Seoraksan National Park, explore traditional hanok villages where history has been carefully preserved, or spend time in the rolling tea plantations and bamboo forests of the south. Along the coastline you'll find quiet fishing villages, beautiful beaches and dramatic cliffs, while Jeju Island offers volcanic landscapes, waterfalls and scenic walking trails that feel a world away from the mainland.
Food is another reason to visit. Korean cuisine is bold, diverse and deeply rooted in local culture. From sharing sizzling Korean barbecue around the table to sampling freshly made kimchi, bibimbap, street food and seafood caught that morning, every meal becomes part of the journey. Travelling through the country also offers countless opportunities to connect with local traditions, whether that's taking part in a tea ceremony, staying in a hanok, learning about Buddhist culture at a mountain temple, or joining seasonal festivals celebrated by local communities.
What we love most about South Korea is that it still feels refreshingly undiscovered by many international travellers. It's incredibly easy to explore thanks to its excellent transport network, yet it retains a genuine sense of authenticity. Whether you're looking for cultural immersion, spectacular landscapes, unforgettable food or cities with so much to discover, South Korea offers a rich and rewarding travel experience that leaves a lasting impression. It's a destination that rewards curiosity, offering something new around every corner and proving that some of Asia's most memorable journeys are found where fewer people think to look.

FAQs About Your South Korea Holiday
Planning a holiday to South Korea? Our experts share advice on everything from what to pack, when to go, to tips for families, covering the questions we get asked the most.
Why should I visit South Korea with Far & Wild?
South Korea is a destination that rewards thoughtful planning. While it's incredibly easy to travel independently, knowing where to go and how to combine the country's diverse regions makes all the difference. We create tailor-made itineraries that balance iconic highlights, such as Seoul and Gyeongju, with lesser-known destinations, national parks and local experiences that many visitors miss. Whether you're interested in food, history, hiking, culture or contemporary design, we'll create a journey that reflects your interests rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all itinerary.
How does Far & Wild choose the best hotels in South Korea?
We look for accommodation that adds to your experience of the destination. That could be a stylish boutique hotel in Seoul, a traditional hanok stay in Gyeongju, or a luxury retreat overlooking the coast on Jeju Island. We prioritise properties that offer excellent service, a strong sense of place and easy access to the experiences you'll be enjoying, rather than simply choosing the most luxurious option. Every hotel we recommend has been carefully selected by our team and trusted local partners.
How does Far & Wild support local communities in South Korea?
We believe travel should benefit the places we visit. Throughout South Korea, we work with trusted local guides, family-run guesthouses, independent restaurants and small businesses wherever possible, helping tourism directly support local communities. We also encourage travellers to make use of South Korea’s excellent high-speed train network, rather than relying on private vehicles or domestic flights, making it easy to explore more of the country while travelling efficiently. By choosing locally owned experiences and encouraging travel beyond the main tourist hotspots, we help ensure more of your holiday benefits the people and places that make South Korea so special.
What are the must-do experiences in South Korea?
South Korea offers an incredible variety of experiences. Wander through Seoul's royal palaces and vibrant neighbourhoods, stay in a traditional hanok, hike in Seoraksan National Park, visit the ancient capital of Gyeongju, and discover the volcanic landscapes of Jeju Island. Food lovers can enjoy everything from bustling street food markets to Korean barbecue and fine dining, while those interested in wellness can experience traditional tea houses, temple stays or relaxing jjimjilbangs (Korean bathhouses).
What food should I try in South Korea?
Food is one of the highlights of any visit. Korean barbecue is perhaps the most famous dish, but there's so much more to discover. We recommend trying bibimbap, bulgogi, japchae, kimchi, Korean fried chicken, fresh seafood, and comforting stews such as kimchi jjigae. Street food is also a huge part of Korean culture, with markets offering favourites including tteokbokki, hotteok and kimbap. Don't be afraid to try something new, as some of the best meals are found in small local restaurants.
How long should I spend in South Korea?
We usually recommend allowing between 10 and 14 days to experience South Korea properly. This gives you time to explore Seoul, discover the country's rich history in Gyeongju, enjoy some time in nature, and perhaps include Jeju Island or Busan. If you have longer, it's easy to combine South Korea with neighbouring Japan or other destinations in East Asia.
How do I get around South Korea?
South Korea has one of the world's best transport networks, making it exceptionally easy to travel. High-speed KTX trains connect the country's major cities quickly and comfortably, while domestic flights are useful for reaching Jeju Island. In cities, efficient metro systems and taxis make getting around straightforward. For most itineraries, public transport is excellent, although we may also recommend private transfers or local guides in certain locations to make your journey even more seamless.
What should I pack for South Korea?
What you pack will depend on the season. Spring and autumn are generally mild, making lightweight layers ideal. Summers are hot and humid, so breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket are recommended. Winters can be very cold, particularly inland, so warm clothing, a coat, gloves and a hat are essential. Comfortable footwear is a must year-round, as you'll likely spend plenty of time exploring on foot.
What should I know about tipping in South Korea?
Tipping is not traditionally part of Korean culture, and it is generally not expected in restaurants, taxis or hotels. Excellent service is considered the norm, and staff rarely expect gratuities. If you're travelling with a private guide or driver for several days, a tip is always appreciated but entirely at your discretion. We'll provide guidance before you travel if tipping is appropriate for any part of your itinerary.
How long does it take to get to South Korea?
From the UK, direct flights from London to Seoul take around 12 to 14 hours, with indirect flights available via major hubs including Dubai, Doha, Helsinki and Istanbul. From the United States, direct flights from cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York typically take between 12 and 15 hours, depending on your departure point. We'll help you find the most convenient routing to suit your itinerary.
Is South Korea suitable for first-time visitors to Asia?
Absolutely. South Korea is one of the easiest countries in Asia to travel around thanks to its excellent infrastructure, efficient public transport and high standards of accommodation. It offers an excellent balance of fascinating culture, incredible food, beautiful landscapes and modern convenience, making it a fantastic introduction to Asia while still offering plenty to discover for experienced travellers.
