Thorntree River Lodge Bedroom Exterior

Thorntree River Lodge

A luxurious lodge on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River.

Luxury and Victoria Falls

Understated luxury and a tranquil atmosphere to create a sense of peace on the banks of the Zambezi

Written with Rebecca Perkins, who stayed for two nights at Thorntree recently and felt like she had stepped out of a tropical spa.

Situated on the banks of the Zambezi river, just twenty minutes from the famous Victoria Falls, Thorntree River Lodge is a beautiful lodge within Livingstone’s Mosi-Oa -Tunya National Park. Thorntree brings together understated luxury and a tranquil atmosphere to create a sense of peace, producing an overall effect similar to what you would find in a spa. There are plenty of fun and exciting activities to experience, from cruising on the Zambezi river to having an encounter with rhinos. The lodge is open all year and is accessed by road transfer, approx. 20 minutes from Livingstone airport. This lodge pairs well with Linyanti Bush Camp.

The lodge offers ten luxury suites, that are relatively close together, but gorgeous chalets along the riverfront and well partitioned from one another. They are enormous and super stylish, the decor is a mix of Western and African, with prints that make you feel refreshed. Though it feels particularly suited to adults, there are two suites that are ideal for families. Each one has huge, comfortable bed(s) and an en-suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers and a large standalone bath tub. There is also a well stocked mini bar included in the rates. Outside each room is a large private decking area with loungers and pillows, next to a private infinity pool on the banks of the Zambezi. The private pools are nicely sheltered by the gardens so you feel like you're at home, from home. Main areas include a large, comfortable lounge area with a well stocked bar, an indoor gym and a library that is more of a WiFi area than a reading zone! There's a lovely little curio shop open each day for those who prefer souvenir shopping from the comfort of AC. There is also a shared swimming pool with loungers in the shallow for a unique experience, plus a dining room with a choice of indoor and outdoor seating and a viewing deck where you'll enjoy a lovely afternoon tea each day.

Activities include a guided tour of Victoria Falls on the Zim and/or Zam side; Zambia’s famous waterfall and one of the seven natural wonders of the world! Your experience will differ throughout the year, see this article for more info, but trust us that you'll be amazed regardless of the season! You can also go on a boat trip down the mighty Zambezi river, where you might see wildlife such as hippos and elephants and watch one of the river’s famous sunsets. Another experience is going on a rhino walk, led by experienced guides and rangers with sightings of rhinos being near guaranteed. This walk may be more of an "encounter" if the rhinos are sleeping near to the road, but in the greener seasons they will be more dispersed and you'll have to try considerably harder to find them. Alternatively, you can go on a Tiger Fishing trip on the river. It doesn’t matter if you've never fished before, as you will have a guide on hand to help you. Rebecca Tiger Fished in the shallows, banks and rapids with a guide named Easy and enjoyed freshly baked muffins and coffee for a break!
