Shoebill Island Camp Tent

Shoebill Island Camp

The best place in the world to see the Shoebill

Perfectly positioned on the edge of the expansive Bangweulu Wetlands

Seasonally flooded grass plains provide a haven for birders and game enthusiasts

Perfectly located in the Bangweulu Wetlands, Shoebill Island Camp offers scenic panoramic views over the expansive grasslands with front row seas to the constant activities surrounding the floodplain. A peaceful harmony, where community conservation is crucial to the welfare of the wetlands and its endemic wildlife, including the iconic shoebill.

Guests can truly relax away from the hustle and bustle of modern life at Shoebill Island. The four safari tents, crafted from traditional canvas, are set on elevated platforms with spectacular views across the wetlands and direct access to birding and Black Lechwe sightings. Each tent gives a nod to Zambian culture, decorated with local fabrics throughout, mosquito-netted beds and a large en-suite with rain-shower. The tasteful communal areas include a dining area, large communal area complete with fireplace.

Due to the nature of the landscape, game viewing is comprised of endemic Black Lechwe found in their thousands, Spotted Hyena, Side-striped Jackal and Sitatunga. Famous for its Shoebill population, the Bangweulu Wetlands are the best place in the world to witness these elusive birds. Shoebill Island attracts birders from all over the world looking to get a glimpse of the mighty Shoebill.

Activities include game drives, walking safaris and shoebill treks, all of which are designed to bring the wetlands experience to life. Keen birders will love Shoebill Island, it offers the opportunity of a close encounter with a Shoebill Stork as well as a variety of migratory birds.
